Welcome Back!

Hi All !
I hope you have all been having a great summer.

It is time to start looking towards September and I know one of the first things that comes to mind is Speed Skating, so below is some information to get you back into the swing / stride of things.

First, we would like to congratulate the skaters who have qualified for the Elite Series (formerly called Provincial Series) for this coming season : Lucy Whaling, Cameron Mason, Vivien Hayter, Sarah Murray, Hayley Murray, Spencer Bladon, and Adam Johnson.
Sara Salvucci and Isaac Turkstra are on the list of alternatives.

We have picked up more hours this year at the Chedoke Arena on Wednesday evenings from 5-8 p.m. This will allow us more options and more ice time for our members to improve. Remember – practicing more times a week significantly improves the rate of improvement.
We have practices at the Dofasco Park on Sunday afternoons and Tuesdays at 5:00, while we have practices at the Chedoke Arena on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Registration is now open. Amy Nilsson is learning the new Speed Skating Canada registration process. Do not wait to register. Please contact Amy at hamiltonspeedskating@gmail.com

We have early ice on the mornings of September 15th and 22nd to get everyone ready for our first ice session on September 30th. The September ice is for any returning skaters, as well as some guests from other clubs, if there is room.

The Club BBQ-Registration-Skate Fitting will be held on September 22nd at 11 Hilltop Place in Dundas.

For the older skaters, I recommend that they continue training to be ready for the season as there are preseason competitions this year starting in late September.

For those who have not really been training, please start doing something. We recommend, for the younger athletes (and require it for the older athletes) that they run cross-country with their school. It is about participation. You will be running with others, so at least, you are participating. Cross-country running will also improve your fitness, and you will become part of your school team helping to represent your school.

Some skaters have been participating in the summer training at the Chedoke Stairs most weeks. Unfortunately, I have been away more this summer than previous summers, but others have helped fill in the gaps most Wednesdays. We meet at 6 p.m. – skaters and family are welcome.

This year, we are allowing younger skaters on the ice for some sessions. Not only are we requiring speed skates for these skaters, but volunteer coaches to work with these young, learning to skate skaters. This program provides another opportunity to include more family members.

As we have room for new members in each of our sessions, please spread the word about speed skating !
